Why Dentists Screen for Sleep Disorders
Dentists are often among the first healthcare providers to notice signs of airway and sleep-related problems. Symptoms such as:
Teeth grinding
Jaw pain
Worn teeth
Dry mouth
Tongue scalloping
Airway restriction
Can all be connected to poor sleep and sleep apnea.
At Island House Dental Care, we believe oral health and whole-body health go hand in hand, and quality sleep plays a major role in both.
The Science Behind the Technology
The sleep ring uses advanced medical-grade sensor technology called photoplethysmography (PPG). This technology measures changes in blood flow, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and respiratory patterns while you sleep.
Clinical studies have shown that ring-based sleep assessments provide results highly comparable to traditional overnight sleep lab testing (polysomnography), particularly for identifying obstructive sleep apnea.
Unlike a single-night sleep lab test, a multi-night at-home assessment often provides a more accurate picture of your normal sleep habits because you are sleeping naturally in your own bed.

Test for sleep apnea without leaving the island.
At Island House Dental Care, we are excited to offer a new way for patients to better understand their sleep health, all without leaving the island.
We now offer a simple 3-night at-home sleep assessment using advanced sleep ring technology. This convenient screening provides data comparable to what is gathered in a traditional sleep lab and can help identify signs of sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders.
Even better, we work directly with board-certified sleep physicians who review your results and can provide recommendations, treatment guidance, and prescriptions if needed, all while allowing you to stay right here on Orcas Island
What Is the Sleep Ring Assessment?
The sleep ring is a small wearable device worn comfortably on your finger while you sleep. Over the course of 3 nights, it collects important health information such as:
Blood oxygen levels
Heart rate
Breathing patterns
Sleep interruptions
Sleep stability and quality
The data is then reviewed by certified sleep specialists to determine whether signs of sleep apnea or other breathing-related sleep disorders are present.
Comparable to a Sleep Lab, Without Leaving the Island
Traditionally Sleep testing required traveling off-island for an overnight stay in a sleep center. Our new at-home assessment provides a much more convenient option while still delivering clinically valuable information reviewed by licensed sleep physicians.
We also work directly with your primary care doctor to ensure you receive the most comprehensive, coordinated care possible.
Through our partnership with certified sleep MDs:
Your results are professionally interpreted
Prescriptions can be provided if appropriate
Treatment recommendations can be discussed
Follow-up care can begin without unnecessary travel
Communication and care coordination with your primary care provider are included
This means patients can begin the process of diagnosing and managing sleep apnea while remaining in their local community.
